Rochester Public Library's BookBike is getting a new partner this summer, the ArtCart!
The two carts will be visiting parks and community events within a one-mile radius of the downtown library.
"We've been doing the book bike for 2 years now," said Head of Youth Services at Rochester Public Library, Heather Acerro. "People have really enjoyed it and we've seen an increase in attendance and we thought the art cart was just a way to expand the activities we were having and give kids more to do."
While the BookBike is geared towards everyone, the ArtCart may be geared more towards a younger audience, or the young at heart.
"Kids think it's so much fun," said Acerro. "Kids love contributing to the community art project."
Kids will be able to contribute to different art project throughout the summer.
The current project is a community mural created with markers, but there will also be water color art and frisbee art.
Both the BookBike and ArtCart allow the library to more actively connect with the community.
"I love being out on the ArtCart and the BookBike just to get outside and be able to have conversations with people too and talk to them about the library resources and do amazing art," said Keri Ostby of the Rochester Public Library.
One the library resources they are promoting right now is the Summer Playlist, which rewards people for reading.
"Our Summer Playlist program is a new summer reading program that is for all ages," said Acerro. "So birth to adult can do this program and we're focused on reading but also activities so if you wanted to learn a new hobby, you could count that as an activity and earn rewards over the summer."
Tracked reading and educational activities will result in rewards of swimming passes to the YMCA, free books, backpack and entrance to win raffle prizes throughout the summer.
Visitors to the BookBike and ArtCart can also get a free library card and chat with library staff.
