Getting In: The College Acceptance Game

Posted:

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Perfect standardized test scores, a laundry list of extracurricular activities, and a report card that would make Albert Einstein jealous.

All assets that seem almost required for high school students these days to get into the university of their dreams.

FOX 47 News is following one local over-achiever on her journey over the next year, on her quest to get into the college of her dreams.

For Mayo High School's Greta Bedekovics, years of preparation and dedication have led to this moment.

Acceptance to Stanford University would be the crowning jewel of years of hard work.

"I find out on December 15th, it's already in my Google calendar," said Bedekovics.

With near perfect ACT scores and a veritable laundry list of extracurricular activities, on paper, Bedekovics is the ideal applicant.

"She is all in. She's driven. She knows where she wants to go," said one of Bedekovics teachers, Julie Brock.

But will that be enough to earn that acceptance letter?

Bedekovics is competing against thousands of other applicants from across the country, all vying for the few coveted spots at the nation's premiere educational institutions.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, more than 21 million students will enroll in American colleges as of this fall.

Stanford has an acceptance rate that hovers around 6%, one of the lowest in the nation.

With her college essays completed and letters of recommendation submitted, for now, all Bedekovics can do is sit and wait in hope near the mailbox... looking for that precious envelope containing the key to her future.
