A Faribault man is safe after two Minnesota State Patrol troopers pulled him from the ice on Cannon Lake in Rice County shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Minnesota State Patrol received a report that a man had fallen through the ice near Interstate 35. Trooper Derek Swanhorst was the first to arrive and saw a man, later identified as Brandon Wilmes, 28, of Faribault, treading water about 60 feet from a bridge near the lake.

Trooper Swanhorst spoke with Wilmes and encouraged him to make his way toward the edge of the ice. Trooper Swanhorst located a dead tree and used it to help move Wilmes toward the edge of the ice.

Trooper Doug Rauenhorst arrived at the scene, donned a life jacket and crawled on the ice to Wilmes. Trooper Rauenhorst held on to Wilmes while Trooper Swanhorst held Rauenhorst’s feet. Faribault Police Office Christopher Tonjum and Rice County Deputy Justin Hunt arrived and assisted the two troopers in getting Wilmes to an ambulance at the scene.

Wilmes was air lifted to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.
