UPDATE: RPS alerts parents about Rochester man arrested, jailed on felony sex charges

Posted: Updated:

Rochester Public Schools has issued an alert to parents about a man arrested and jailed last Friday on sex charges involving a child.

Superintendent Michael Muñoz said Wayne Bothun, 57, had worked as a Volunteer in Education in the fall of 2016 at Sunset Terrace Elementary School in Rochester.  But Munoz said there's no sign that anything bad happened between Bothun and children.

The superintendent further said that RPS has learned that Bothun worked as a bus driver for Minnesota Charter Bus Company and had contact with RPS students participating in extra-curricular activities.  The full message to parents is below:

Dear Rochester Public School Families,
The district is aware of a pending criminal matter involving Mr. Wayne Bothun. We do not have any information that would lead us to believe that any RPS students are impacted.
Here is what we know:
Our records show that this individual has been a previous Volunteer in Education (ViE) at RPS from October 3 - November 28, 2016 at Sunset Terrace Elementary. Our records show that the background check of this individual passed. We have also learned this individual was employed by a charter bus company that Rochester Public Schools has contracted with in the past (Minnesota Charter). This individual has transported RPS students via the charter service for extra-curricular activities. This person has never been employed with Rochester Public Schools. We will continue to work with law enforcement on this matter as we are learning more information. We have sent this message to all email addresses listed within Skyward Student Management System.
Sincerely,
Michael Muñoz
Superintendent

Bothun remains jailed at Rochester's Adult Detention Center with bond set at $50,000 with conditions.  He was charged Monday with two felony charges of Criminal Sexual Conduct involving a child under the age of 13 but has denied the allegations that he engaged in sexual acts with a child on multiple occasions in late 2017 and early 2018.

(Below is the first version of the story posted on Monday, February 12.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Rochester man is facing two charges of Criminal Sexual Conduct involving a child under the age of 13.

Wayne Bothun, 57, who has been living in the 32-hundred block of 11 1/2 Avenue Northwest has been jailed at the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center since Friday and made his first court appearance Monday afternoon.

In a criminal complaint, investigators accuse Bothun of engaging in sexual acts with a child on multiple occasions between late 2017 and early February. The complaint is based on an interview with a police officer on February 9 in which the juvenile victim described Bothun's alleged behavior in detail and said it happened on multiple occasions.

Bothun denied the allegations of sexual misconduct with the child.

Bothun is jailed on $50,000 bond with conditions, including having no contact with the alleged victim or witnesses, or anyone under age 18.  Bond without conditions was set by District Judge Jeffrey Kritzer at $200,000.  An Omnibus Hearing date was set for April 17 in the case.
