Combining reading and the Olympic spirit at an elementary school
ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -
February is "I love to read month" and Rochester's Franklin Elementary School is encouraging their students to hit the books by getting in the Olympic spirit.
Throughout Tuesday, Franklin students got the chance to show-off their outdoor bobsledding and snowboarding skills as well as participate in an Olympic torch run.
Indoors, students got the chance to compete in curling and practice their ski jumps, along with being inspired by athletes' stories.
"Olympians have stories of perseverance and struggle so some kids are really starting to be interested in reading about how maybe it can perceive to them later. They had a great time out here, they are excited, running around 'where should I go next?' the friendship, the kids holding hands and running together it was just a great day," says Franklin Elementary Teacher Deb Frederick.
We're told each class has chosen a country to read and learn about, and Tuesday's "Franklin Olympics" helped some students see their country's popular sports in action.
