Polar Plunge In Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -

While the Winter Olympics are being played overseas, Rochester is holding its own winter event.  The Rochester Polar Plunge took place Saturday with volunteers showing what it means to be "freezin' for a reason."

Brave plungers jumped in frigid water to raise money for Special Olympics Minnesota.  Different teams dressed up in their craziest bathing suits as onlookers enjoyed the spectacle.   Event organizers say while raising money was their main goal, it was also important to provide entertainment for those in attendance.

"They sit there and it's really a weird kind of a combination and contrast in a sense of you got plungers running out in bikinis and you got people out in the crowd in the stands all bundled up and all you see is a nose and a couple eyeballs," says Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson.

Chief Torgerson says there haven't been any health-related issues with plungers in years past.  Nearly 1,000 people took the plunge last year, raising nearly $275-thousand in support of Special Olympics Minnesota.
