Opposition To Wind Farm Proposal

Posted: Updated:

Proponents of a new wind farm project that could be coming to Freeborn County say it could benefit the area economically, but not everybody in the area is sold on the idea.  People opposing the project have listed numerous concerns about it.  Issues range from noise and flicker to farming concerns and a transmission line going through the Shell Rock River.

Some people like Sue Madson with the Association of Freeborn County Landowners say the proposal could negatively affect property values.

"I had a market analysis done here and he said I could possibly be looking at sixty to seventy thousand dollars for a loss if the turbines come and they're that near my home," she says, "So, that's another worry for everyone else."

Madson lives just outside of Glenville and runs a daycare center.  She says it's not fair for people to have turbines built near them that they don't want.

"For me having a day care, if you've seen shadow flicker before, it's like someone turning on and off a light switch.  I worry about that, how that will affect the children here," she explains, "Children are excitable.  And the noise.  And as you can see, it's quiet out here."

Madson also says her organization has had a petition that has gone around the area, and judging by information in it, she's convinced a majority of people who live near her don't like the idea of the project.

The Association of Freeborn County Landowners has hired an attorney to look out for the needs and concerns of people in the area.  That has brought up a contested case that will be heard in Albert Lea on February 21st and 22nd.  There will also be a public hearing on the project on February 20th.
