Some Oronoco residents continue campaign to keep smelter from their neighborhood

ORONOCO, Minn. (FOX 47) -

After the Oronoco Township Board meeting, residents are finding themselves in a difficult situation, with out much to do.

The FOX47 team got drone video of the business, Crosstown Auto, back in September, when this headache began for the neighborhood.

Residents say the smelter has not fired up just yet, however that hasn't stopped a caravan of trucks from going through their road into the business multiple times a day, sometimes dropping refuse on the road.

However neither the city nor the township of Oronoco can do anything at the current moment, because the location is currently under review by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

Residents are happy to get some answers but aren't backing down.

"It doesn't seem like the township is really going to be able to do anything until we hear back from the Pollution Control Agency," Brandon Evans, an Oronoco Resident, said. "Hopefully they get back to us and have some info that we can work with and do something in the future."

Currently the County Officials in charge of permit review have told them that the business is non-compliant with the ordinances but was grandfathered in.

The affected residents say they now plan to go to the County Board level for some sort of solution.
