Fishing For A Cure In Austin

AUSTIN, Minn. (FOX 47) -

While many Minnesotans are spending their Saturdays ice fishing for recreation only, some people in Austin are ice fishing to help others.

Austin anglers were out on East Side Lake Saturday to help raise funds for cancer research.  It's all part of the Paint the Town Pink campaign.  Fishermen and women were out on the ice taking part in the Fishing For A Cure event, which has raised almost 87-thousand-dollars for cancer research at the Hormel Institute since 2009.

Pink memorabilia could be seen all around.

People who were out fishing were eligible to win cash and other prizes.  Event organizers such as Glenn Newman say Fishing For A Cure has deep roots as an Austin fundraising event.

"It started back in the early 2000s.  It was just a bunch of guys from work that got together just to have a little fun, let a little steam off.  And it turned into this," he explains, pointing out at the multitude of ice shanties on the lake, "So, we had extra money, didn't know what to do with it, decided to donate it to the institute."

After the event concluded, anglers went to the Eagles for a meal and some auctions.
