WASHINGTON, D.C. (FOX 47) -

Members of congress often invite a guest to join them for the State of the Union Address.

Tuesday night, Senator Amy Klobuchar (DFL) is bringing a Minnesota mother who lost her daughter to opioid addiction three years ago after she was over-prescribed pain medication.

Shelly Elkington of Montevideo will be in the house chambers to help raise awareness of the opioid epidemic, which claims 91 deaths per day according to the CDC.

Elkington's daughter was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2008 and was subsequently overprescribed pain medication. Klobuchar hopes to bring more attention to the issue in order to combat the opioid crisis.

In Minnesota, drug overdose deaths continued a decade-long trend of growth in 2016, climbing to 637 deaths by the end of the year.
