Rochester Police Department proposes renovations, additions to North Station

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -

The Rochester Police Department says it's running out of space in its downtown headquarters and it's hoping to keep branching out.

The department presented plans Monday to City Council for renovations and an addition to its North Station on 41st Street NW and West River Parkway NW.

The city purchased the old Think Bank building three years ago for the department to use.

Some administrative employees moved in last April.

Now, police are hoping to renovate the building so that more employees can move in.

"It's the support staff functions that takes up the office space, the other facilities in the department. So it's actually freed up quite a bit of space and it's really made the functioning downtown a lot easier as well as the North Station, so we are seeing a significant amount of benefit from that even before we get into these later phases of construction."

About 60 percent of the patrol force would also move into the North Station.

The project would cost about $18 million to $19 million in borrowed funds.

City Council needs to first approve the project, which could happen at its next meeting.
