ST. CHARLES, Minn. (FOX 47) -

A woman escaped a fire in her home in St. Charles at 3:30 a.m. Friday, but her home on East 14th Street was destroyed.

St. Charles Fire Department First Assistant Chief Aaron Carlson said a preliminary investigation suggests that the fire in a wood burning stove grew out of control and spread to the house itself.

Firefighters used a ladder to pour water on the blaze from above, and later used spotlights to hunt for hot spots.

"It was pretty smoky in there," said Heather Christopherson.  "Once the rafters caught fire, it went pretty fast."

Christopherson said she lost everything.  As she sat at a neighbor's home hours later, she shared with us that she had lived in the home for 15 years.
