Mayo Albert Lea hospital workers file notice for one-day strike
ALBERT LEA, Minn. (FOX 47) -
A strike is on the way in Albert Lea, where employees of Mayo Clinic Health system say they've had enough of what they call Mayo's "devaluation of rural healthcare."
79 employees that are members of SEIU Healthcare Minnesota voted last month to authorize a potential one-day strike. Now, the union said it's happening on Tuesday, December, 19th.
Six skilled maintenance workers have joined that general group to participate in this one-day 'Unfair Labor Practice' strike at Mayo Clinic Health System Albert Lea. 92 percent of the employees voted to authorize the strike.
The workers include certified nursing assistants, housekeepers, and other employees.
The union said Mayo is demanding a clause that would allow the hospital to take benefits away from employees at any time.
The union said Mayo responded to last month's strike threat with a threat of their own. The alleged threat would lock out workers for a week if they held the strike. The lock-out would last through Christmas.
