Iowa Supreme Court asked to rule against certain types of traffic stops

(FOX 47) -

Four civil rights groups from Iowa are asking the Iowa Supreme Court to declare certain types of traffic stops unconstitutional.

They filed an amicus or "friend of the court" brief today against so-called pretextual traffic stops.

The Iowa ACLU says in pretextual traffic stops, an officer uses minor violation as an excuse to stop a driver in order to investigate unrelated suspected crimes.

They contend African-Americans and other minority groups are subjected to those types of stops at a much higher rate in Iowa than white people.

The brief filed has to do with an OWI case in Black Hawk County.

Iowa-Nebraska Conference of the NAACP, League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa and 1,000 Kids for Iowa also participated in the brief filing.
