Fifth graders at Riverside Central and Pinewood Elementary Schools are the first in Rochester to learn ballroom dancing in class.
Thursday at Riverside Elementary, students were able to show off their work for parents and other classmates, performing the Foxtrot, Tango and Rumba.
They're taught by Heart of Dance, a Minnesota nonprofit that goes to schools and teaches Fifth through Eighth grade students ballroom dancing.
Students spend one hour, two days a week, for ten weeks learning the dances with their classmates and Thursday was the first performance for a Rochester school.
"They go home and they get their parents to do the tango and that's something their parents don't know. So when you can do that, you gain confidence and it spills over into their other school work. So we see and hear and the results show that academic improvement often follows," said Heart of Dance Co-President, Ember Reichgott Junge.
In addition to Thursday's performance, the school will also send a 14-member team to participate in an all-state competition in Bloomington.
