Sheriff's Office: Counterfeit bills used during car sale, catch man in Spring Valley

A car sale goes wrong for one man in Olmsted County, but authorities are able to arrest the man at the center of it all.

According to the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office, a 27-year-old man was looking to sell his 1998 Audi A-4 sedan, at an Olmsted County gas station, to a man from northern Iowa.

The cash transaction was done around 8:30 Saturday night when the alleged victim realized something wasn't quite right. The man went into the convenience store and was told four $100 bills were counterfeit.

Olmsted County Sheriff's Deputies sent notifications to agencies south of the area to keep an eye out for the Audi.

Later that night, the suspect and car were found at the Kwik Trip in Spring Valley.

Terry Grotegut, 26, of Waukon, argued he'd received the money from a recent sale of his motorcycle, and didn't know anything about fake bills. Authorities didn't buy the story and were able to discover a small amount of meth on him.

He was brought to the Olmsted County Jail where he faces potential Motor Vehicle Theft and Theft by Swindle charges, as well as a drug charge.
