ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -
A Wyoming man was the recipient of a face transplant at Mayo Clinic, Rochester in February, 2016. Now, an update on his life-changing surgery.
32-year-old Andrew Sandness from Newcastle, Wyoming recently met with the widow of the donor.
Lilly Ross had feared seeing her husband's face on a new man would trigger painful memories. Instead, after meeting with Andrew at Mayo Clinic, she said she was proud to see how his life had transformed since the surgery 16 months ago.
Andrew's first face was heavily injured by a gunshot wound when he was 21. Ten years later, he was able to experience a new face after a 56-hour surgery at Mayo Clinic. Prior to the procedure, a surgery team devoted 50 Saturdays to rehearse the operation over 3-and-a-half years time.
