Children in Rochester are learned valuable outdoor skills Tuesday with the help of the community.
Riverside Elementary School hosted a "Bear Creek Celebration" to give students a chance to learn more about the outdoors--especially about Bear Creek, which is next to the school.
The DNR and several other community partners set up booths to teach things like fishing skills and canoe safety.
Some organizations brought reptiles and farm animals for kids to pet.
Organizers say it's an eye-opening day for students.
"It's really exciting to see some of these little kids," said Harland Hiemstra from the Minnesota DNR. "At first they're very tentative about touching these animals and then they get in there and pretty soon sometimes they're holding them and it's just pretty exciting."
The DNR and the school hope to take the kids to Whitewater State Park next spring to continue working on those outdoor skills.
