Stealing a Rochester Police squad car and running from police lands 1 man behind bars, police say
ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -
A late night manhunt is over and a Rochester man is behind bars after he allegedly stole an officer's car. Police say that man ran from the car after *crashing* it.
The hunt for the suspect ended outside a home on the 900 block of 9th Ave. SE after he crashed the squad car just a block away, near Slatterly Park.
Rochester Police said it all started when an officer stopped to investigate a suspicious vehicle at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and 16th Street Southeast around 10:30 Tuesday night.
Police said 23-year-old Travers McDaniel, of Rochester stole the squad car after the officer got out of it. McDaniel didn't get very far before he crashed it next to Slatterly park. After the crash McDaniel ran away.
Rochester Police, State Patrol, and Olmsted County Sheriff's Office found McDaniel outside a home on 910 9th avenue Southeast just before 11:30 p.m. with the help of a canine unit.
Officers said McDaniel had a strong scent of alcohol on his breath when he was arrested.
"When somebody gets inside your squad, and goes off with it, with all your tools, usually all your tools, weaponry, inside the squad, that's a serious incident," said Sgt. John Mitchell of the Rochester Police Department.
According to Sgt. Mitchell the suspect possibly suffered minor injuries from the crash. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
McDaniel could face several charges, including theft of a motor vehicle.
