Civic Center Commission considers new sports arena

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -

Rochester city leaders are taking the next step in planning a new sport and entertainment venue to replace the current Taylor Arena at Mayo Civic Center.

The Mayo Civic Center Commission listened to a presentation Tuesday about what kind of economic impact a new venue could have on the city.

A study by PricewaterhouseCoopers found that a new arena could bring about 80 additional events to Rochester annually, and it could generate more than $4 million of direct spending in the city each year.

The Civic Center would also look into bringing a U.S. Hockey League team to the arena.

The Convention and Visitors Bureau says this project would have different benefits than what the recent renovations to the convention center had.

"This is really for the residents, the locals, that would be coming here for entertainment, for shows, for concerts, for sports activity," said Brad Jones, Executive Director of the Rochester Convention and Visitors Bureau. "The difference being the arena as opposed to a convention center."

The Civic Center Commission voted Tuesday to send the issue to the city council, so that it can form a task force to continue on with planning.

The new arena would be funded through a mix of private partners and public dollars.

The Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates the planning and construction process could take about two years.

The current Taylor Arena opened in 1986.
