PINE ISLAND, Minn. (FOX 47) -

A Pine Island woman is representing her hometown and her Latina heritage on the statewide level.

Alejandra Murch, a 24-year-old senior at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, is getting ready to compete in the Miss Minnesota Latina pageant as "Miss Pine Island Latina."

It's a pageant specifically for Latina and Hispanic women.

Contestants compete in swimwear, cultural costume, and evening gown.

Alejandra was adopted from El Salvador as a baby and she grew up in Pine Island.

This will be her first pageant.

She hopes to use the experience to teach other young women about self discovery and acceptance.

"I wanted people to see me as equal as other people, and I feel like today in this world there's a lot of labels, and we kind of all put each other in groups," she said. "And I think with this competition it's a nice way to help build that Latina community in a different way."

The pageant is November 5th, at the Minnesota History Center.

The winner will move on to compete at Miss U.S. Latina.

You can keep up with Alejandra's journey to the crown on her Facebook page.

Alejandra is the daughter of Mark and Cindy Murch
