A group of firefighters is bringing attention to a common health concern in their profession.
The Rochester chapter of the International Association of Firefighters presented a $10,000 check Wednesday to Mayo Clinic for testicular cancer research.
The money came from one of the organization's New York chapters, that had started a cancer research fund after one of its members died of cancer.
That chapter chose Mayo Clinic to receive the donation, which is why it asked the Rochester chapter to present the check.
The chapter's president says cancer is a growing issue among the firefighting community as more plastics are present in homes.
"It's really a good feeling to be able to present this money to the Mayo Clinic for all the work that they do in research," said Chris Ford, President of the Rochester chapter of IAF. "And it really means a lot to us and hope it means a lot to the community because us as firefighters, with them leading the way doing cancer research is huge for us."
The International Association of Firefighters is also working to create legislation that will help firefighters who get cancer.
