Field of Flags honors and remembers those affected by cancer

Posted: Updated:

If you're driving through Blooming Prairie over the next couple weeks, you'll notice hundreds of flags near the city's downtown area, all for a special cause.

The Blooming Prairie Cancer group spent Sunday evening putting 250 pink flags into the ground near the intersection of Highway 218 and Main Street.

It's part of the annual "Paint Blooming Prairie Pink" event, which raises funds for cancer research and support for cancer patients through sporting events, musical performances and a live auction.

Each flag honors or remembers a loved one who has battled any form of cancer.

"A few years ago we had a cancer patient who was actually going through cancer treatment and she came from the South and would come by here every day on her way to treatment and she sent us a card afterwards and said it reminded her every day that she wasn't fighting alone, that we were all here fighting with her," said Cheri Krejci, one of the event organizers.

The flags will stay up through the end of the Paint Blooming Prairie Pink live auction on September 8th and 9th.
