Austin residents have the chance to jump in on a growing trend in energy.
Austin Utilities demonstrated its new community SolarChoice program Tuesday.
Customers can subscribe to a specific number of solar panels in what's called a "solar garden" near Owatonna, to power up to 75 percent of their home's electricity.
It allows anyone to use solar energy without having to install panels on their own roof.
John Gray, a customer who already subscribed to the program, says he signed up because it was a simple way to help the environment.
"It came down to, one, being a responsible citizen of not only Austin but of the resources that we have available to us," Gray said. "So the solar choice I think is a great choice."
Austin Utilities will be holding three informational workshops in October to provide more information on the program.
So far, 105 people have applied for the program and it's sold about 47 percent of its available panels. If the first solar garden is filled, Austin Utilities plans to build another solar array in Princeton.
