UPDATE: Bureau of Criminal Apprehension releases new details about Hokah officer-involved shooting

UPDATE: We're learning more about the suspects involved in a chase and exchange of gunfire with officers in Houston County on Monday.

Officers arrested 19-year-old Wyatt Helfrich, of LaCrosse. He was injured in the crash but is expected to appear in court today.

William Wallraff, also 19-years-old, is expected to to appear in Houston County Court tomorrow. They're both expected to face probable cause attempted murder charges.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said around 1:30 Monday morning two La Crescent officers spotted two teenage men acting suspiciously at the Kwik Trip in La Crescent. The BCA said the officers were trying to pull the suspects over at Highway 44 and Highway 16 in Hokah and when they approached, the men started shooting. The officers returned the gunfire. 

The men led officers on a pursuit near Caledonia until the suspects crashed into a bean field. Both men ran off into the field but surrendered soon after.


UPDATE: New information is released in an early morning officer-involved shooting near Hokah.

According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, two police officers encountered two male subjects behaving suspiciously at the Kwik Trip at 319 S. 3rd St. in La Crescent around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

When the two men left the gas station, the officers pulled over their vehicle at Highway 44 and Highway 16 in Hokah. During the traffic stop, the officers encountered gunfire and they returned fire.

The men then drove away, starting a pursuit. The chase ended with the men's vehicle crashed into a bean field near Highway 44 and Carpenter Road in Caledonia. Both men got out of the vehicle and ran through the field. Eventually, the men surrendered.

One of the men injured in the incident was taken by ambulance to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released. Officers then booked the man into the La Crosse County Jail on probable cause attempted murder.

The other male was take to the Houston County Jail on probable cause attempted murder. Charges are expected within the next few days.

The La Crescent Police Department does not use body cameras. Squad cameras captured video of the shooting incident.

This investigation is in its very early stages. The BCA will provide additional information once initial interviews with incident participants and any witnesses are completed. When the investigation is complete, the BCA will turn its findings over to the Houston County Attorney's Office for review.

The Houston County Sheriff’s Office, Caledonia Police Department and Minnesota State Patrol are providing assistance at the scenes.


PREVIOUS STORY: Two suspects are in custody after an officer-involved shooting.

The shooting happened early Monday morning near Hokah. According to the Houston County Sheriff's Office, two suspects were arrested and no officers were injured. The sheriff's office also said there is no longer a threat to the public.

The sheriff's office has now handed this part of the investigation over to the B.C.A.

There was more than one crime scene so MnDOT is being instructed to close down Highway 44 between Hokah and County Road 20. The closure is expected to last for most of the day, while B.C.A processes the scene.
