The number of pedestrian deaths in Minnesota is at the highest they have been in 25 years. Preliminary numbers show that 60 pedestrians died in 2016, compared to 41 in 2015, and 17 in 2014.
2016 saw the highest number of pedestrian deaths since 1991, when 61 pedestrians lost their lives.
The most recent pedestrian death in our area occurred near Oronoco on Highway 52 on December 1, 2016. A 65-year-old Rochester man was outside his vehicle, when his trailer was sideswiped, and he was hit and killed.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says drivers need to pay attention. Distracted driving is a leading cause of pedestrian crashes.
