2017 is not looking good for gas prices. Since 2012, gas prices have been declining every year, but this trend is projected to change. According to GasBuddy, prices at the pump will be the highest they have been in three years, bringing the national average to $2.49/gallon. Last year, the average was $2.13/gallon. Throughout 2017, drivers are expected to spend around 25-50 cents more per gallon, totaling up to $125-180 dollars more per vehicle this year.
"The rise in oil prices we can blame on OPEC's oil production cut, which they announced in November of last year," Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy Senior Petroleum Analyst, said. "That almost immediately caused oil prices to rise by as much as $10 a barrel, and has caused gas prices to jump in response."
Rochester is already seeing some higher prices. Wednesday, the average price of gas in Rochester was $2.34 a gallon, up 50 cents from last year. To save money on gas, DeHann recommends shopping around, not all gas stations in an area offer the same price.
