Authorities have identified the drivers involved in a deadly head-on crash near Byron on New Year's Eve.
The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday morning that Daniel Pyfferoen, 60 of Byron, was killed in the collision. The other driver, Jordan Wilde, 19 of Byron, was taken to Mayo Clinic - Saint Marys, where he was listed in fair condition as of Tuesday morning.
The sheriff's office said Wilde was westbound on Valleyhigh Road NW in a Ford Focus when he crossed the center line and hit Pyfferoen head-on at 10:56 p.m. Saturday.
The sheriff's office said Wilde admitted to smoking marijuana prior to getting behind the wheel Saturday night; however, Wilde's surgeries following the crash have prevented deputies from being able to talk to him to learn more details. A urine sample is being tested for drugs in the meantime.
A rural Byron resident was killed in a head-on crash in Olmsted County late Saturday night.
The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office says deputies and members of the Byron Fire Department responded at about 10:56 p.m. to the 8,000 block of Valleyhigh Road Northwest in Kalmar Township.
Two vehicles had crashed head-on. When first responders arrived, they found a 60-year-old person from rural Byron dead at the scene, according to the Sheriff's Office. The name of the victim has not been released.
The other driver involved was a 19-year-old man believed to be from Byron. His condition was unknown as of Sunday.
The Sheriff's Office says the investigation is ongoing. More details are expected to be released Tuesday morning.
