Byron woman scammed from person claiming to be grandson

BYRON, Minn. (FOX 47) -

A local woman has been scammed out of tens of thousands of dollars after a call for help from someone claiming to be her grandson.

The 70-year-old woman from Byron said she got several calls between August 19th and 22nd from someone claiming to be her 12-year-old grandson.

The caller said he had been in an accident and needed help.

The woman said she also got calls from someone claiming to be with the Albert Lea Police Department saying that cocaine had been found in the car involved in the crash.

The fraud victim wired $30,000 through FedEx to an address in Brooklyn, New York.

The Olmsted County Sheriff's office warns anyone that bails money should not be wired, and that you must investigate any call from someone claiming to be a family member in trouble.
