ROCHESTER, Minn ( FOX 47) -- Funerals are an expense for any family; but when faced with planning one unexpectedly, the hurdles can be much greater.
That's the position Veronica Vasquez found herself in Friday night, when her brother, Juan Martinez, who goes by Paul, was killed in a crash on Highway 52. Martinez was in a car that crossed the Highway 52 median near Zumbrota, killing him and his son's new girlfriend, 23 year old Aisha Ruiz.
His son, 22 year old Paul Martinez Jr., is in stable, but critical condition. As her extended family is making their way up from Texas, she's making a plea to the Rochester community to help with the expense.
"The last words were that he was coming back; because he was going to celebrate his birthday, which was Saturday," explained Vasquez. "Instead we're getting ready to not celebrate, but do his funeral," Vasquez said.
Along with scrambling to get the money for funeral arrangements, the family is continuing to hope the nephew's condition improves.
