Mayo employees participate in evacuation drill

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Just a day after Mayo Clinic was named the number one hospital in the nation by U.S. News & World Report magazine, the clinic executed its first emergency evacuation drill at the Hilton Building.

Two-thousand employees evacuated the building about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. Rochester police and fire department squads were on scene as well as Gold Cross ambulance crews. The building was evacuated within 15 to 20 minutes, which Mayo Clinic officials were satisfied with.

The Hilton Building is primarily used for clinical testing, but it does contain office space, and small patient care areas for blood draws. Though the start of the drill was delayed, we're told the evacuation went smoothly.

"We want to make sure that we're testing our safety processes for evacuating buildings," said Dr. Melissa Snyder of Mayo Clinic. "We want to ensure that our patients and employees know what to do in the context of an emergency."
Second Street Southwest between Second and Third Avenues was briefly closed for the drill.

Patients did not have to participate in the drill.
