Local Marine embarks on epic Mississippi River journey

ZUMBROTA, Minn. (FOX 47)-- One local veteran is set to embark on a colossal challenge across the largest river in North America- all to raise money, support, and awareness for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress.

Over the next 64 days, local Marine Cpl. Joshua Ploetz  will canoe more than 2,000 miles down the Great Mississippi River.

Throughout his journey, dubbed "Paddle Off The War", Ploetz will carry with him "The Baton", a handle cut from a stretcher used to aid service members serving in Afghanistan.

Ploetz told us what serving our country has meant to him.

"Heartache, but also, honor. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Every moment, every day. All the people I have ever met," said Ploetz.

The side of Ploetz's canoe will bear the names of fallen service members.

He will begin the paddle on Lake Itasca this Monday and is set to wrap up in Venice, Louisiana this August.
