ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- The deadline to sign up for health insurance or risk facing tax penalties is now hours away, coming at midnight Monday.
But during the day on Monday, the sheer volume of people trying to sign up through MNsure is causing problems. Call centers have been pushed to capacity.
MNsure officials are urging people to fill out an enrollment attempt form on the website if they can't get through online, and that was the scene at Three Rivers Community Action in Rochester.
As MNsure navigator Colleen Hansen at Three Rivers Community Action led one man through the sign up process Monday afternoon, she had to get creative.
Instead of being able to complete the application on time, problems with the website meant they had to fill out that enrollment attempt form and then a paper application.
The enrollment attempt form is what needs to be done by 11:59 tonight.
"It's just a brief survey that asks their name and their email and phone number so that MNsure can contact them and then how and when the attempted and then they just submit it and that holds their place in line," said Hansen.
Hansen said the site was working normally until about 11 o'clock this morning before she had to resort to paper applications. A lot of people have been trying to sign up at the last minute; Hansen said she saw about twice the amount of people she does on a normal day.
