CHARLES CITY, Iowa (FOX 47) -- A fire that raced through a four-unit apartment complex in Charles City on Monday afternoon killed one person trapped inside.
Fire Chief Eric Whipple said when firefighters arrived at 303 5th Avenue about 2:40 p.m., the front porch and the front entryway to the building were fully engulfed. Later, investigators said they believe the fire started in a piece of furniture on the front porch, likely from "discarded smoking material."
"When most of the fire was knocked down, an interior search was started, and inside the structure a person was found have died inside one of the apartments," said Whipple, in a statement to reporters. "That person was transported to Floyd County Medical Center by ambulance, and the name of the deceased will not be released at this time."
The Charles City Fire Department identified Linda Brant of Charles City as the owner of the building. The structure was heavily damaged by fire, smoke and water.
