Equine virus infecting Minnesota horses

Posted:

WINONA, Minn. (FOX 47) -- At least three horses in Minnesota have been euthanized because of a highly contagious equine virus called equine herpesvirus 1.

Three cases of the virus have been confirmed, but tests are pending on four other cases.

Veterinarians at Bluff Country Equine in Winona confirm they did treat one horse, but test results have not confirmed the virus.

According to Dr. John Bengfort, a person noticed symptoms while unloading a horse in Winona last Friday and contacted their office.

Bengfort said they treated the horse over the weekend, and said the horse, now being treated by its primary veterinarian, is improving.

The virus is highly contagious between horses, but Bengfort said it did not contract the virus in Winona.

Symptoms include fever, respiratory issues and neurological issues like incoordination and difficulty urinating.

At least two of the horses were euthanized because they could not get up.
