ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Two Rochester Public School Buildings are up for sale, and one could become a center for Rochester's homeless.
Right now neither building is sold.
Back in January, the district officially closed the Golden Hill and Gage East Schools.
At Tuesday's meeting, the school board opened them up for sale so that interested parties can start making bids.
The Golden Hill Learning Center and Gage East School have served many purposes for the Rochester School District.
Gage East has most recently held kindergarten classes, but since 2009 it has housed the Boys and Girls club of Rochester.
When they moved into their new facility this fall, the district saw a new opportunity.
"We thought it was a good opportunity to sell the property," said Superintendent Michael Muñoz.
Golden Hill has held special education programs, kindergarten programs, and preschool programs.
Most recently it held the alternative learning center, but when that moved into a new building at the start of this school year -- the same thing.
"We don't see a need for that site in the future," Muñoz said.
We don't know for sure what either school will become in the future, but there has been talk about would could happen to Gage East.
"Right now we're working with a group that's interested in purchasing it to provide permanent housing for homeless, and we see that as a win-win for the district," Muñoz told KTTC back on February 12.
But at Tuesday's meeting, that was not part of the conversation.
"At this time, we are not selling it to anyone," Muñoz said. "It just gives us permission to go out and start advertising that we are selling them. At some time we will come back to the board with an offer and they'll have to vote if they want to accept the offer."
The school district still uses the Gage East gym for its gymnastics program.
They could sell the building with or without the gym, but Muñoz says the district will provide a space for gymnastics no matter what.
Combined, the two properties have an estimated worth of $3.1 million if the Gage East gym is included in the sale and $2.7 million without it.
