700 people turn out for Take A Kid Ice Fishing in Eyota

EYOTA, Minn. (FOX 47)--More than 700-people went ice fishing in Eyota at the "Take A Kid Ice Fishing" event.

Take a Kid Outdoors, Inc. is a Rochester non-profit with a mission of providing free-outdoor activities to children from across the region.  This is the second year the organization has put on the event.

"Our goal was to get rid of any excuse a dad might have if a kid were to ask, 'Dad, can I go fishing?'" said President of Take a Kid Outdoors, Chad Holst.  "Really I think the only excuse they could give is that it's cold but this is take a kid ice fishing not take a kid swimming so that works out nice."

The cold and heavy snow wasn't excuse enough to miss out on Saturday's activities for many families.  Participants waited in line to borrow a fishing rod, bait and received free buckets.  For some parents it was an opportunity to teach their kids their favorite pastime.

"At some point I'd like to take her fishing with me and I haven't yet so ice fishing seemed like the perfect time to start," said Matt Quiding of Rochester.  "It's Minnesota, might as well get used to the cold."

Seasoned anglers were on-hand to teach new-comers what the sport is all about.

"I haven't ice fished since I was a kid, so I don't know anything, I just hold the pole and try to catch fish," said Jesse Phelps of Kasson.

Others were ready to experience the outdoors in a new way.

"I guess it's surprising. When you think of ice you think of slippery.  There's tons of snow it's kind of hard to tell we're even out on the ice," said Jen Jacobson of Rochester.

Governor Dayton's office issued a special waiver so no participants needed a license for the event.
