Extreme cold poses costly problems for cell phones

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- The seemingly unending cold snap has left it's mark on everything from our cars to our heating bills.

The bitter temperatures are also causing problems for one device many people use all day long.

Since the arrival of winter, Rochester's Fast Phone Repair has fixed countless cell phones damaged by the cold weather.

The most common problems include broken screens and water-damaged devices, which can cost hundreds of dollars to fix.

The cold temperatures make phones fragile, decrease their battery life, and can slow down the speed of some touch-screen devices.

Moving a cell phone quickly from outdoors to indoors can also cause dangerous moisture to build up inside a device's screen.

"It can actually trip the water damage indicators on your device, not only voiding the warranty, but it can actually ruin the device," said Fast Phone Repair owner James Gorecki.

Gorecki also recommends keeping your cell phone insulated in your coat or pants pocket to prevent any damage from occurring when outdoors.
