Project Community Connect helps those living on little

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Volunteers met at Mayo High School Friday to host an event that provided resources, information, and a little pampering to those who need it most.

More than 50 vendors set up shop in the gymnasium of Mayo High School to provide resources to those living on little.

It's the sixth year for the event. Jobs were a large focus of the day, from finding employment to getting training and education.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., visitors found housing resources, legal assistance, help for veterans and even eye exams -- free of charge.

One of the vendors, the WIC program, sought to educate and help mothers and families with young children.

"Get in contact with a lot of, for myself, families that either didn't know about the program or hadn't been on in a while and we try to get them to come back, it's very beneficial." said WIC's Sallky Vanshaick.

Those who attended also got free manicures and haircuts for the family from stylists who volunteered their time. There were fewer people at the event this year than last year, but Jennifer Johnson said that doesn't mean the need has gone away.
"One of the things people ask is, 'can we do this more than once a year?' We have so many people coming in to get connected with our 50 different vendors that come to this, get a chance to get connected to a free haircut and have someone kind of take care of them for a day. So it's our chance to give back to some individuals in our community," said Jennifer Johnson of Workforce Development.

Other resources offered at the event were free HIV testing, photo IDs, and a free meal.

Rochester Public Transit provided free bus rides to the event for those who needed transportation.
