Spitzer will not seek 6th term as St. Charles Mayor

ST. CHARLES, Minn. (FOX 47) -- For nearly a decade, Bill Spitzer has served as mayor of St. Charles, but he's decided it's time for a change.

Spitzer announced Friday evening at the annual St. Charles Boards and Commissions Appreciations Dinner that he's not going to seek a sixth term in office as the city's mayor.

He's been the leader of St. Charles since 2005 and steered the community through a handful of major challenges, including the flooding of August 2007 and the massive fire that destroyed North Star Foods in April of 2009.  As smoke billowed over his city that day, a methodical evacuation began, and Mayor Spitzer was on the scene providing constant updates.

"There's potential of chemicals in the smoke and that's why we're taking these precautions," Spitzer told KTTC's team of reporters on the scene. "We don't know what exactly is in the smoke at this time, so we're making sure that everybody is safe. Just a precautionary measure."

At the dinner Friday evening, the long-time mayor said it's just time for a change in St. Charles.

"Every organization needs to evolve and this seemed like the appropriate time to move on to my next challenge,"  said Spitzer.

The mayor said he's most proud of his role in helping launch the Food for Families program two years ago.  The program provides food for some 60 people in need each month.
