How to tell if you have counterfeit cash

Posted:

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- With counterfeit cash becoming more common in recent months, police are warning you to lookout for fake bills.

To the average person it can be difficult to tell the difference between a real and a counterfeit bill.  While the bills are meant to be deceiving, the threat however is straight forward.

Counterfeit currency affects an entire community.  Local business owners end up short on their tills at the end of the night, and residents can end up a dollar short than they thought they were.  The passing of counterfeit currency is like a painful game of hot potato.

"If a bill gets into circulation the threat to the public is that the last person who has it when it's identified they are out the money.  If I have a counterfeit 20 dollar bill, I give the bill to you, you take it to the bank, the bank says this is a 20 dollar bill, your out the twenty dollars," said Kenneth Presley, Eastwood Bank facilities manager.

The paper bill may seem simple, but it is actually it's own security system.  Counterfeit bills look different in ultraviolet light.  There are many areas on a bill that include micro print, which is a font so small that it can't be scanned.  Even the complexity of the paper makes special pens mark differently when used on the bill.  If you don't carry around a magnifying glass all the time there is one easy way to tell.

"The feel of the bill.  The quality is not there, and people can usually tell there's something a miss," said Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger.

The Secret Service works closely with local law enforcement to prevent counterfeit bills from reaching circulation.  With several investigations going on around the state into the matter, you are urged to contact your local law enforcement if you notice anything suspicious.
