AUSTIN, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Detectives in Austin have been investigating counterfeit bills that have been circulating the area for a while, and officials say they may have just caught their break.
Austin police say officers pulled over two 21-year-olds for a what they thought was a simple traffic stop, but they ended up finding much more.
Officers arrested Aduo Omot on Monday for possession of counterfeit 20 dollar bills. He was riding with Artika Adams when she was pulled over by police for weaving in her lane and crossing the center line.
Police say they smelled marijuana smoke in the car and searched the two, finding several counterfeit 20 dollar bills.
"The feel of the bill, the quality is not there, and people can usually tell something's a miss with a counterfeit bill, but obviously there are times where some of those bills are pretty high quality. Without the counterfeit pen, it's difficult to tell by just looking at them," said Austin Police chief Brian Krueger.
Police arrested both-- Omot for counterfeit curency, and Adams for possession of marijuana, no proof of insurance, and no Minnesota license.
