3 kids get bacterial infections from Minn. farm

Posted:

DAYTON, Minn. (FOX 47) - Three children have come down with bacterial infections after they played with animals at a pumpkin farm in Dayton.

The state Department of Health said Saturday the children are from the Twin Cities area and range in age from 15 months to 7 years.

They've been confirmed with E. coli O157:H7 infections. All three petted goats or cattle at Dehn's Pumpkins on Oct. 12 or 13, and they got sick last week.

One child was hospitalized with hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious complication that can result in kidney failure. The other two weren't hospitalized.

The health department says the bacteria are common in cattle and goats, and Dehn's is cooperating with the investigation. The farm has closed public access to the animals but its pumpkin patch remains open for business.
