Lewiston places police chief on leave, external investigation pending

LEWISTON, Minn. (FOX 47) -- An investigation of the Lewiston police chief is underway, while the Lewiston City Council has put him on paid leave.

According to the Winona Daily News, city officials say the investigation of Chief Joe Hastings involves alleged misconduct. The Lewiston City Council held an emergency meeting last Monday where the decision was made.

Now, the Olmsted and Winona County Sheriffs offices are doing a joint, external investigation.

Hastings has worked for the city of Lewiston since 2010. He previously was police chief in Hackensack, Minn.

This isn't the first time there's been controversy within Lewiston's police department.

In 2010, the city council voted to fire then-chief David Kleinschmidt for falsely reporting a crime, and a lack of truthfulness.

As for now, part-time officer Troy Leibfried has been appointed temporary chief.

So far, the Lewiston police department has not returned our calls for comment.
