Local group puts on food drive for recently furloughed workers

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Even though the government shut down has ended, furloughed employees may not see checks for at least a few weeks.  A local group in town is trying to do something to help them.

The Community Food Response held a food drive today at the Salon on 1st Avenue Southwest.

Food was donated from local residents and establishments like the Kahler Hotel.  People could stop in and enjoy a hot meal and live music.  On their way out they could leave with donated food.

Organizers say that above all it brought people together.

"There's folks that, you know, are under served right here in this building.  And there is people that have more than enough, and are willing to share and to see them sitting down together and talking and chatting and smiling with each other and greeting each other is just a wonderful thing," says event coordinator Gale Julius.

The group says they are in discussion about having this event twice a year, hoping to eventually grow it to 4 times a year.
