ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47)--Hundreds of members from the Hindu Samaj Temple participated in a new land inauguration ceremony at the site of its new temple in Northwest Rochester. According to the Temple's Board of Directors, construction on a new facility at 1548 Hadley Creek Drive NE is expected to begin within the next year.
The ceremonial blessing is one of several events being held at the site this weekend in celebration of the land purchase.
"The temple is not just a place of worship for us but it's also a cultural center, it's also a gathering place so we as a community come together," Santhi Subramaniam, President of the Hindu Samaj Temple Board of Directors.
The congregation of more than 600-families outgrew their downtown Rochester facility and is now planning on adding community rooms and other amenities to the new Temple.
"For a church or any place of worship, you want someplace you can be one with nature," said Suresh Kotagal, President of the Temple's Board of Trustees. "This facility, this particular site-brings a sense of spirituality to it and we're very delighted to be here."
"This is a dream come true. It is very important for us to have a temple here in Rochester. This is a marathon for us so we are running to reach that goal and we hope to have a temple in two years," said Sumanthi Jayakumar.
The Temple is expected to be completed by January of 2015.
