PINE ISLAND, Minn. (KXLT) -- If your travels take you north of Rochester on Highway 52 Wednesday, you'll notice the new Elk Run interchange near Pine Island is finally open to traffic.
MnDOT says it's taken more than a year to construct the interchange, and it's probably unlike anything you've ever driven on in Minnesota.
Officials say the Elk Run Interchange is one of the first diverging diamond interchanges in the entire state, where opposing lanes of traffic criss-cross at the ends of the intersection.
MnDOT says the design saves money, can accomodate higher traffic volumes with improved safety, and is safer for both pedestrians and bicyclists.
Officials say with the new interchange now open, access to Highway 52 from 520th Street and 120th Streets is now permanently closed.
