Klobuchar talks sequestration cuts in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar joined Mayo Clinic officials in Rochester Tuesday afternoon to discuss the impact of sequestration spending cuts to Alzheimer's research in the state.

Klobuchar said the across-the-board cuts will result in a $1.5 billion loss in funding for the National Institutes of Health.

The NIH supports many disease research programs across the country, including the Mayo Clinic's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.

With the mass of baby boomers reaching old age across the country, Senator Klobuchar claims Mayo Clinic's Alzheimer's research will curb government spending in the long run.

"If we are able to delay the onset of Alzheimer's by just five years, we would be able to cut the government spending on Alzheimer's care by almost half. That's why this research is so important," said Klobuchar.
