"Perfect Storm" for Grass at Area Golf Courses

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Last year's drought, combined with this season's flooding, has proved to be the "perfect storm" for grass and turf at local golf courses.

Rochester Parks and Recreation Director of Leif Erickson told FOX 47 News turf conditions at Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester are as bad as he has ever seen them.

"We actually had people playing golf in January last year. We never had that insulating blanket of snow that we normally get in November that would normally protect the turf," said Erickson.

Erickson and his team must now embark on the arduous task of repairing the grass and turf ravaged by the extreme weather.

According to Erickson, the course damages have resulted in approximately $50,000 in loss compared to the 2012 season.

The damage to golf courses is not limited to southern Minnesota.

"We've seen it all the way from the cities up North, and then all the way down to Ames, Iowa. There's the same kind of damage everywhere," said Erickson.

However Erickson said if local courses have strong business in both July and August, recovery is possible.

More good news? Eastwood Golf Course plans to open one fairway that had previously been closed due to damage by Friday.
