Byron pool closed as residents try to beat the heat

BYRON, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Those looking to beat the heat at the Byron pool are going to have to get creative.

Byron Mayor Ann Diercks says, "I believe that water was being added on a regular basis every day and then there was a crack in the cement and at that point it was investigated and we found that the pipe had actually burst."

The pool closed a week ago. Byron daycare provider Shianne Bush says she relies on the city pool for summertime activities like swimming lessons.

Bush explains, "Lack of option. Because doing daycare I don't necessarily have the time to run all the way to Rochester or Stewartville or even Kasson is a distance so a lot of times we walk where we go. We don't always fit in my vehicle so if we can walk we can all go and it doesn't matter how many kids I have in a day."

Now city leaders are going to have to decide whether or not to fix the pool. Last winter the city started discussing replacement of the 25 year old summertime staple.

Diercks says, "Is it smart to put in $60,000 worth of repairs and continue to open it? Is it smarter to use that money for a newer, bigger pool? We don't know those answers as of now."

Byron resident Bryan Morris says the pool is an investment his family enjoys using.

Morris says, "Families, kids go there. There's a spot for the kids who are in school together for them to hang out and see each other. I think it's a pretty important meeting spot."

A meeting spot now that sits empty during the hottest month of summer.

The city council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 6. The City Administrator says they will also be talking about how to handle those who have already bought swimming lessons and season passes. She says they'll look into options like pro-rated reimbursement.
